Dizzy/Vertigo What is it? What to do about it
Vertigo is a sensation of spinning or moving, often caused by inner ear issues like BPPV, where loose crystals disrupt balance. It causes dizziness, nausea, and imbalance. Management includes slow movements, the Epley maneuver, staying hydrated, and reducing alcohol/caffeine. Seek immediate help for severe headache, weakness, or fainting. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
What is Vertigo?
- The Feeling: A false sense that you or your surroundings are spinning, swaying, or tilting.
- Common Causes: The most common cause is Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV), which occurs when tiny calcium crystals in the inner ear become dislodged. Other causes include vestibular neuritis (inner ear infection), Meniere’s disease, or migraines.
- Symptoms: Dizziness, nausea, vomiting, balance issues, and lightheadedness.
What to Do About It (Management & Relief)
- Immediate Relief: Sit or lie down instantly when dizziness strikes, preferably in a dark, quiet room.
- Repositioning Moves: The Epley maneuver involves specific head movements to move crystals back into place, often providing relief within days.
- Lifestyle Adjustments: Move slowly, avoid sudden head turns, sleep with your head elevated, and avoid bending over at the waist.
- Reduce Triggers: Limit caffeine, alcohol, salt, and tobacco, which can worsen symptoms.
- Hydration: Drink plenty of fluids, as dehydration can aggravate vertigo.
