“Out of the Forest & Into the Woods”

In this raw and unflinching episode, Thomas Lacovara sits down with Mara from Oklahoma, a courageous survivor of multigenerational sexual abuse and systemic betrayal. Mara shares her harrowing story of being groomed as a child by her own mother — a covert narcissistic enabler who used her daughter as a distraction while pursuing drugs and extramarital affairs — to shield herself from her pedophile, incestuous husband’s wrath.

This is not merely a story of one family’s catastrophic failure to protect a child. It is a damning indictment of the entire “System” — the institutions, courts, the local police Chief and agencies that are supposed to safeguard the vulnerable but instead enable predators and punish victims.

Mara details how her mother ignored a serious genetic condition, Chiari II malformation (a congenital brain malformation occurring in approximately 0.44 to 1 per 1,000 births, nearly always linked to myelomeningocele/spina bifida), which went undetected and untreated for years, leaving Mara in chronic, debilitating pain throughout her childhood and into adulthood. This often led to associated syringomyelia — a fluid-filled syrinx in the spinal cord causing central neuropathic pain (burning, aching, shooting), sensory loss, muscle weakness, and other progressive neurological complications. Instead of compassion or medical intervention, her reports of suffering were met with ridicule and punishment.

Even after allegations were proven false, the same mother manipulated the system through lies to secure temporary physical custody of Mara’s only child

 — a stark example of family court failures that prioritize procedure over justice and child safety.

The local chief of police, being a friend of Mara’s abuser didn’t make matters any better. His actions and violation of Mara’s rights lead directly to her losing the house she bought and had for 8 years. Between the loss of her health due to an injury, the loss of her home, and all or her personal property being robbed which was facilitated also by the local police allegedly, she thought she was finished….. but her spirit remains alive and fighting.

Despite these unimaginable odds, Mara overcame the statistics that typically doom survivors of such severe childhood trauma.

Research shows that victims of multigenerational childhood sexual abuse face dramatically elevated risks of long-term adverse outcomes, including substance abuse disorders, homelessness (with over 90% of homeless women reporting severe physical or sexual abuse histories), mental health conditions like PTSD, depression, and anxiety, relationship difficulties, and cycles of revictimization.

Yet Mara, younger than her mother when she secured stable housing for 8 years and raised a straight-A student involved in extracurricular activities — a polite young man with an excellent relationship with his mother — built a life that truly seemed like a miracle.

Thomas Lacovara is personally investigating and reporting on this case in pursuit of accountability and justice. Together, they expose the layers of small-town and county-level corruption that protect abusers while silencing survivors.

This episode pulls no punches. It connects the dots between personal horror, medical neglect, and institutional rot — from missed prenatal/postnatal screening and family court manipulation to the broader mechanisms of control that allow such abuses to persist. Essential listening for anyone fighting for truth, parental rights, and genuine justice.
