From what I’ve heard legal migration already started to have a noticeable upswing under Orban, just like what was happening in Poland before Tusk’s election. Meloni and Wilders similarly did nothing to stop migration. For Italy under Meloni it actually significantly worsened. Trump is heading down the same road, you can already see the administration clamoring to do a large scale amnesty and increasing legal migration.
Compare it to Tusk’s and Merz’ election campaigns, both of them waffled on mass-migration publicly, while dog-whistling against it. Magyar’s position was similar to Orban’s. So, what is the real difference between these politicians and the so-called populists at that point for voters?
