How many people do you suppose it takes to control 7 billion? If Price’s law is accurate, then just under ±84,000 (83,666 to be exact).

According to the Fabian society itself, George Bernard Shaw came up with the idea of a wolf in sheep’s clothing as the group’s mascot, and at the suggestion of Frank Podmore the group was named after “Fabius the Delayer,” regarded as the originator of many tactics used in guerrilla warfare. From the Fabian society site:

His Fabian strategy sought gradual victory against the superior Carthaginian army under the renowned general Hannibal through persistence, harassment, and wearing the enemy down by attrition rather than pitched, climactic battles.

An explanatory note appearing on the title page of the group’s first pamphlet declared:

For the right moment you must wait, as Fabius did most patiently, when warring against Hannibal, though many censured his delays; but when the time comes you must strike hard, as Fabius did, or your waiting will be in vain, and fruitless.

So, what is the stated purpose of the Fabian society?

The Fabian Society is a British socialist organisation whose purpose is to advance the principles of democratic socialism via gradualist and reformist effort in democracies, rather than by revolutionary overthrow.

‘Democratic socialism’ is one of those notoriously fancy terms of art (i.e. sophistry). What is it, what does it mean? Well, it depends on whom you ask. We could look to the Fabian society, but doubtfully receive a direct answer. In my opinion, Sandy Ikeda spells it out best:

Coercion and self-direction are mutually exclusive. And as government planning supplants personal planning, the sphere of personal autonomy weakens and shrinks and the sphere of governmental authority strengthens and grows. More socialism means less real democracy.

Democratic socialism, then, is not a doctrine designed to protect the liberal values of independence, autonomy, and self-direction that many on the left still value to some degree. It is, on the contrary, a doctrine that forces those of us who cherish those liberal values onto a slippery slope toward tyranny.
